Windows Server 2003 Support Coming back to DPM 2012 R2

There have been some grumblings since the release of DPM 2012 R2 as it dropped support for Windows Server 2003 even though Windows Server 2003 is still supported by Microsoft. You can see a glimpse of the communities feedback on this at this TechNet thread:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c425421b-b726-4125-82fc-beae8947722c/dpm-2012-r2-agent-update-on-windows-2003-server-x64?forum=dpmsetup

Many environments out there (and usually not by the choice of the IT staff) still have Windows Server 2003 footprints in their environments. DPM 2012 R2 not supporting backup of Windows Server 2003 is a big problem. Many companies still run line of business applications on that OS.

There is good news today. Microsoft has listened to its customers and cares about what the customer needs. Microsoft is planning to bring Windows Server 2003 support back to DPM 2012 R2 in the next UR.

Here is a response on that TechNet thread from one of the DPM product group members:

Hello Folks, I am the GPM for the DPM product group and sincerely apologize for this. Not supporting an already supported server OS for back-up is DPM 2012 R2 was a mistake. We are fixing this in the next update roll-up for DPM scheduled to be released shortly. Thanks for your patience.

There is no date on the UR release yet, but it is a good sign that this is being reversed! Thanks Microsoft.
