Installing Data Protection Manager 2010

Original Article: http://www.packtpub.com/article/installing-data-protection-manager-2010

Microsoft Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2010 is a backup and recovery solution which provides continuous data protection for Windows application and file servers to seamlessly integrated disk, tape, and cloud.

The DPM installation as well as the upgrade process is pretty straightforward. The areas where the DPM installation can get tricky are prerequisites, hardware and software requirements, as well as making sure your operating system is properly updated and patched. All of these things need to be met or completed before you can start the DPM installation.

In this article by Steve Buchanan, author of Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2010, shall cover the following topics:

  • Installing DPM
  • Installing Single Instance Store (SIS)
  • Installing DPM (on a local or remote SQL instance)

Prerequisites

In this section we will jump right into the prerequisites for DPM and how to install them as well as the two different ways to install DPM. We will first visit the hardware and software requirements, and a pre-install that is needed before you are able to actually install DPM 2010.

Hardware requirements

DPM 2010 requires a processor of 1 GHz (dual-core or faster), 4 GB of RAM or higher, the page file should be set to 1.5 or 2 times the amount of RAM on the computer. The DPM disk space requirements are as follows:

  • DPM installation location needs 3 GB free
  • Database file drive needs 900 MB free
  • System drive needs 1 GB free
  • Disk space for protected data should be 2.5 to 3 times the size of the protected data

DPM also needs to be on a dedicated, single purpose computer.

Backing up QuickBooks Enterprise with DPM

Traditionally QuickBooks backup has been done manually using the backup utility that is built inside of QuickBooks itself or using the paid online backup service from Intuit. My company runs QuickBooks Enterprise and I needed a way to automatically back this up using DPM. Well you can automate the backup of QuickBooks using DPM but you have to be sure you are getting the right stuff.

You will need to set DPM to backup the QBW file along with some other folders and files. Here are the details:

  • QBW stands for QuickBooks Working file. This file is your QuickBooks data file and contains all of your QuickBooks data it is typically in the following folder %systemdrive%:\Quickbooks\ or %systemsrive%:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks version\. You may have changed this default folder during the installation of QuickBooks.
  • Transaction log – The Transaction log logs all changes to the company file before they are actually committed to the .qbw folder. This will be in the same folder as the QuickBooks company file the .qbw file. This file will be in this format: [company file name].qbw.tlg. This will need to be restored along with the .qbw file and placed in the same folder.

NOTE: The Transaction log is only cleared out when a complete backup of QuickBooks is run using the backup utility directly in QuickBooks. Backing up the files automatically with DPM will not clear this and the same is true if you were using Inuit Online Backups or another backup program. It is a good idea to go into QuickBooks periodically and run a backup using the backup utility so that your transaction log does not get to big.

Remove SIP & Pool Info from AD accounts

I recently moved from OCS 2007 to Lync 2010. We decided to remove the OCS 2007 deployment and start over fresh with Lync as OCS was deployed before our time and did not seem like a clean deployment. When uninstalling we ran into some errors when un-prepping the forest and domain using LCSCmd.exe. We did get OCS uninstalled so we decided to move forward.

I was able to get Lync 2010 deployed just fine. However when I went to add users that existed on the OCS 2007 deployment to the new Lync 2010 pool and Lync would not let me add them

Lync gave an error message of “Filter failed to return unique result, “[SipAddress: sip: user@domain.com]” due to their Active Directory accounts having the old SIP address and pool information on them.

What I did to fix this is removed the old pool and SIP address from the accounts of the users in Active Directory. Here are the steps:
